Institute presentation

The modern ICU/CCU division is part of the 3rd Medical Department with Cardiology, Wilhelminenhospital, Vienna, Austria, and closely linked to the main catheterization facility of the department. All interventional procedures in cardiology are offered. The cathlab treats about 450 acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients (150 STEMI, 300 NSTEMI) and 1100 stable patients with coronary artery disease for diagnostic and/or therapeutic reasons per year, and performs about 350 pacemaker and about 70 ICD implantations per year. Approximately 11% of the ACS patients exhibit typical signs of cardiogenic shock. Including these patients, the overall in-hospital mortality rate of acute coronary syndrome patients (STEMI and NSTEMI) is approximately 5 %. Cardiogenic shock mortality is still about 30 - 40%.

As a renown leader in the treatment of ACS Prof. Dr. Kurt Huber was and is involved in many international randomized clinical trials as national coordinator and steering committee member. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Kurt Huber was member of the DSMB of the IABP-SHOCK II trial which is the largest randomized clinical trial in cardiogenic shock performed so far. Prof. Dr. Kurt Huber has published > 400 peer-reviewed scientific papers with a total impact factor of >2000. Prof. Dr. Kurt Huber is a nucleus member of the Association of Acute Cardiovascular Care (ACCA) of the ESC and was part of several guideline committees (NSTEMI, STEMI, myocardial revascularisation) in the past.
