Institute Presentation

The institute for laboratory medicine, clinical chemistry and molecular diagnostic (ILM) as part of the University hospital of Leipzig is responsible for the medical health care of ambulant and stationary patients of the hospital as well as external clinical sites and registered doctors. The major assignments accomplished by the ILM are diverse laboratory analyses of blood, urine and other body fluids as well tissue analyses, to issue lab reports including consultant interpretations and medical validation by given diagnostic issues. So, the 25 PhDs and MDs as well as the over 60 technicians of ILM manage about 2500 patient samples a day and so achieve about 5 Mio. laboratory assays per year using over 900 validated and certified diagnostic methods. The ILM as a safety lab offers an entire spectrum of both clinical and molecular laboratory diagnostics and is accredited according to the guidelines 98/79/EG, DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 (ZLG-P-578.04.08-01), 93/42/EWG, 90/385/EWG and DIN EN ISO 15189 (ZLG-P-578.04.08). All work is performed in accordance to the latest FDA and EMA guidelines and is carried out on the basis of GLP.

The spectrum of laboratory analyses comprise various disciplines such as clinical chemistry, hematology, hemostaseology, coagulation, endocrinology, immunology, infection diagnostic, therapeutical drug monitoring and molecular diagnostic performing most of these services within 24/7-fulltime medical care.

Besides medical full medical care, education and research aspects, the ILM also has acquired a broad expertise in the successful organization and performance of local, national as well as international basic research studies and clinical trials over the last 10 years. A high performance cryobank is established at the institute to implement professional services including handling, characterization, labeling, long-term storage (up to -130°C) and remobilization of diverse biological samples with the purpose to preserve the integrity and scientific validity of all stored samples. Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Thiery is Director of the Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics. His main research fields are experimental atherosclerosis and genetics of atherosclerosis susceptibility Dr. Uta Ceglarek, Ph.D is senior scientist at the University Hospital Leipzig, Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics (ILM). She is board certified in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory medicine (European Clinical Chemist) and in toxicology. She is group leader of the mass spectrometry group. Her research efforts are focused on the development and evaluation of new laboratory diagnostic research-and routine methods enabling the targeted analysis of metabolite and proteins in complex body and its application in large scale clinical studies (metabolomic studies).
